Climate change activist or conspiracy theorist? Climate change is here and happening.
It sometimes feels like there is not a lot we can do as an individual but we can make conscious choices on what we choose to support and spend our money on.
In the window furnishing industry we are doing our bit.
Reduce
Buying local and reducing your ‘carbon footprint’ is the only real way to reduce in the context of the window furnishings industry.
You are covered at Frazerhurst Curtains and blinds as we are a local Whangarei family business and we choose to sell the Weathermaster® brand. A New Zealand manufacturer of interior and exterior window furnishings.
Recycle
Here at Frazerhurst, via our forward-thinking suppliers, we have access to fabrics made from recycled materials such as the ‘Encore and Renew’ recycled wool ranges from Warwick. The Deserts Collection made from plastic bottles by Maurice Kain and Kumo made from 92% recycled polyester from James Dunlop amongst others.
“Deserts collection is 100% recycled content. Each meter of fabric contains 57 one litre plastic bottles that have been recycled and prevented from entering landfill.” Maurice Kain
“Producing recycled polyester is better for the climate, creating up to 75% less CO2 emissions than virgin polyester. Recycled polyester yarns lessens our dependence on petroleum as a source of raw materials and prolongs our waste from entering landfill or incinerators”. Warwick
We also supply Hemptech, a New Zealand fabric company that have a recycling programme where their own cuttings and waste are sent to make recycled paper right here in Whangarei at the papermill.
Weathermaster®, our chosen blind manufacturer has Aluminium Venetian Blinds that are manufactured from 95% recycled materials.
Reuse
Here at Frazerhurst Curtains and Blinds we have our own programme of Reuse or Re-purpose.
Our deleted drapery hangers and short ends are turned into wall art, reusable shopping bags or given to local craft groups who make toiletry bags for Women’s Refuge or shopping bags.
My personal favourite – curtain couture. Dresses, waistcoats and coats all translate well using drapery off cuts and left overs.
Call into the Frazerhurst Showroom at 146 Lower Dent Street Whangarei and take away some off cuts for your own Reuse project.
